Hey there,

I know I’ve been absent for a while, and haven’t released some videos which were waiting in the pipeline as previously promised, but I think I have the ultimate excuse in the form of a mini human I’ve been carrying around for the past 8 months. I don’t know much about her yet - most will be discovered in about 1.5 months (and for the rest of our lives…), but I do know that she likes to kick, yawn, and dance when there’s live music played (she gets especially energetic when the bass is loud). So we can all “blame” this miniature bundle of joy for pushing aside everything else and completely taking over my focus, with much anticipation, endless excitement, and a fair amount of worry as well for the person I’m about to be the mom of 😮.

Meanwhile, I’m delighted to share my great-bass solo version of ‘Two Roses’ (composed by Mordechai Zeira), as well as my composition ‘Alone’, performed as a duet with the brilliant Adam Hersh on Rhodes.

‘Two Roses’ is a beautiful classic song with heartbreaking lyrics, I find it very relevant to the current time. You can read the lyrics translation from Hebrew here.

Hello my dears! 😻

Friday has arrived and with it my new video - “Nina”! This is the third track from my upcoming EP ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 2’ , and the one I’m the most thrilled to share with you so far.

You know how much I love writing melancholic songs, but for this one I went all out in the opposite direction. I usually write music starting from the harmony, letting my fingers find their way on the piano, and sometimes I end up with a very non-user-friendly key when I finally try to play it on the recorder. For some reason I never change the original key I wrote the song in (this is a really dumb unexplainable rule I have for myself) so here I got “stuck” with some very bizarre fingerings, but I kind of like struggling a bit for every note :) Making big movements on the tiny recorder is fun.

You’ll also hear a peculiar effect on my leopard recorder, as well as some overdubbed recorder harmonies I added later in the song because there’s no such thing as too much harmony or too much recorder - not in my book, anyway 😜

Hey fam 🌻 !

I’m excited to share the second video from my new EP ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 2’ entitled ‘Separation’. I composed this one back when I was living in NY and have been waiting for several years to put it out.

This performance begins with a short intro on my Cheetah recorder 🐆 (the ‘Elody’ by Mollenhauer!). I used a harmonizer effect with a slight delay to get that ethereal sound.

In the past couple of years I’ve been experimenting with effect pedals, and I feel like this has created a mini musical revolution for me, in a similar way to when I got my first bass recorder 10 years ago. Discovering a new sound completely changes my musical expression - it evokes my imagination, makes me experience different feelings, and as a result brings out new musical ideas.

It’s been a minute since I’ve written to you - and although this is only a newsletter, I’ve gotta say, I missed you 🥰 I enjoy sharing my art with y’all and love reading your responses. Thanks for being so supportive and encouraging and for being open to my recorder experiments :)

Today I’m so happy to share with you my composition ‘Inspiration’, the first track from my upcoming EP ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 2’, recorded during a special live show in the Bay Area a little while ago. As always, I’m accompanied by musicians that I admire and love - Adam Hersh (rhodes), Caleb Buchanan (bass), and Angelo Spampinato (drums), who are truly a dream come true to collaborate with! We had such a warm and magical time with the audience in this show and I hope that comes across in the recording.

Hi family,

I’d like to share with you a new video I just released - a live recording from 2017 of three pieces from my album Memoire.

This was a project that fell by the wayside and I had no idea if I would ever release it. I was deliberating for a long time about this live recording, and couldn’t figure out how I felt about sharing this exposed performance - and as time went by, it made less and less sense to put it out.

A few months ago I had the urge to look at it again - I was curious to know how I’d feel now that 7 years have passed. Making an effort to put my embarrassment and self-judgement aside, I was very moved by the raw emotion that Dror Pikielny, the director and editor of this video was able to capture, and the complete conviction and true beauty in the playing of my band mates: Micha Gilad on piano, Noam Israeli on drums, and Yoni Marianer on bass, who also was the musical director of the album. For these two reasons, I felt like this had to be shared, regardless of how comfortable I feel. So here it is!

You can find the lyrics in the video description, and although the words come from my personal experiences, they symbolize to me so much that is broken in the world right now.

Hi my dear friends,

I’m happy to share with you the last video from my new EP ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 1’.

This is the final movement from Bach Partita BWV 1013, originally for flute. I studied this piece as a teenager with my beloved teacher Bracha Kol.

Bracha, who received me as a very young student with open arms and an open heart, with care and dedication unlike any other person I know, is probably the main reason why I am a musician today. Over the 13 years with her she taught me not only how to play this instrument, but how to discover myself through music, to express everything I could never find words for through sound. With her I learned to love music so deeply that it seems like every single note from every piece we worked on is stored in my memory forever.

Bracha wouldn’t let anyone put me down or dim the light in me, despite some people in high positions telling me I’m not conforming enough. She never let anyone make me feel small or wrong, and from her I learned - there is no such thing. She taught me how to be a teacher myself and how to see the world in every student, in every musician, in every human.

Hey my dear not-so-extended family!!

Here we are with video no. 4 - Omer. This is one of the first instrumental compositions I’ve ever written. Growing up as a performer, I didn’t think I’ve got what it takes to write music - I figured that composing comes naturally to some people, and others just don’t have that ability. One day, I remember thinking I’d just experiment with the idea - “If I was a composer, what would I write?”. This was still too broad of a question, I had to narrow it down. At the time I used to listen to a phenomenal pianist and composer, and a friend of mine from back in the day - Omer Klein. I thought to myself - “what would I write if I was him?”

That thought sparked a whole composition which (unlike many of my other compositions) came so effortlessly. I think this idea helped me feel confident, inspired, and to be able to detach myself from the way I perceived my ability. This experiment also taught me that listening to music you love is an essential part of the creative process.

I’m so glad I found a path to unlock what became over the years perhaps my biggest passion, apart from the recorder. It truly opened up a gate to a different, profound way of experiencing music.

Hey folks!

It’s me again :) and here’s video no. 3, ‘Debka’, from my new EP ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 1’.

This is a gorgeous piece by Shem Tov Levy, originally for a bigger ensemble, adapted for recorder and drums, played by my beautiful husband Angelo! One might say, this video is a cymbal or our love 🤔🥁♥️

To get the meditative effect in the beginning and the end, I sing into the recorder, and that creates a buzzing sound that either stays in one place while the recorder wanders around, or moves, creating another melody to accompany the recorder.

In the middle section, I took the rhythmic part from the original piece and let it go wild ☺️ every time we play this section it sounds different, as Angelo’s drum part is completely improvised.

Hey everyone!

I’m happy to announce the release of my new video - ‘Road Signs‘, the second song from my  new EP, recorded live with an audience, entitled ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 1’.

This piece is an arrangement I did a few years ago for a song I love by Naomi Shemer about finding your way back home. There’s something so simple about the original song, although interestingly each line of the original melody is 5-bars long - very atypical for this type of folk music (if you’re curious you can hear a classic version of the song here). This inspired in me both the thought of stability versus turmoil and its representation in music, and also the use of a repetitive bass line in my arrangement that is based on groupings of 5/8. I also changed the harmony quite a bit in the choruses and kind of hid the main melody in the piano part. With a keys solo by Adam Hersh and a drum solo by Angelo Spampinato, and some weird alien-sounding recorder effect to accompany it, this took a very different direction, which only comes back home I think in the last intimate chorus, which is the part that most resembles the original song.

This is a very different project than anything I’ve done previously. I recorde(re)d this EP in front of a live audience in our previous home, which is something I’ve never dared to do before I met Hush Paz, the visionary of this project and a true sound wizard. He transformed our living room into a high-end studio in a few hours(!!) and also mixed this project with the utmost sensitivity to the finest details. I’m so proud of the amazing team work and talent that went into the music, by everyone involved: Mauricio Morales, Adam Hersh and Angelo Spampinato - my dedicated band that always takes it to the next level, Charlie Weinmann on the camera, Angelo (once again!) edited the videos, Oren Yaacoby helped us get the vocals just right, JJ Golden of Golden Mastering mastered masterfully, and all our friends who came to support. ♥️

Hey there beautiful ppl :)

I’m so excited to share with you the first song from my new EP, recorded live with an audience, entitled ‘Live Recordering, Vol. 1’.

Some songs are written quickly, and some take years to gradually bloom. This one has grown and changed with me over the years until it became what it is now. This performance is a collaborative effort with my band mates who put their heart and soul into playing my music. Although this is an Etude for Solitude, I couldn’t have done this without them.

The process of writing this piece began with the challenge of composing something with only my recorder. This might seem odd, but almost all of my songs are composed on the piano and start with me exploring different harmonies. But in this song, I wanted to stick to the melodic line and see where it could go, in isolation from its environment. There is a certain quality to a melody on its own, which feels almost like silence. The harmony and arrangement came years later.

Hello my dear friends,

I'm pleased to tell you that the second single from my upcoming album, 'Adama', is now out on all platforms.

This one comes from a very private place I don't normally share. People very close to me know I've dealt with some immense fear throughout my life, since I was very young. Learning as a kid that my dad had a terminal illness shattered my world - from then on, I was preparing every single day for when the time comes. It could have been a few months, a year, two years. It ended up being 21 years. My dad, a real-life superman, beat all odds, to the point his doctors had no advice for him since there wasn't any medical record on people who survived for so long.

Throughout these 21 long years, while I was blessed to have a wonderful, close and loving relationship with my dad and countless precious moments, I always had that fear grasping at my throat, threatening at any given time that this might be the end of everything. Unfortunately, my dad passed away a few years ago, shortly after I recorded this album. This song was played in his funeral, as requested by my mother, and it ever since gained a new meaning for me.

The song touches on the twilight zone in between life and death. It's me trying to make sense of the transition from being to seizing, to imagine what the final moments would feel like, and what thoughts go through one's mind as they come to terms with the unimaginable yet inevitable.

This song, like the rest on this upcoming album, was musically directed by Yoni Marianer with the utmost sensitivity and care. Yoni played bass as well, and I was very lucky to have Micha Gilad on piano and Noam Israeli on drums.

Hello friends,

I'm beyond excited to share with you the first single, 'In This Valley', from my upcoming album produced by my dear friend, award-winning producer Javier Limón.

I've always been a recorder player first and foremost, but I felt with this project that I wanted to go deeper. I didn't want to hide behind the recorder, but rather put the compositions and the lyrics in front, as fragile as they are.

This first song is especially dear to my heart. When I came across this beautiful poem by Yehuda Amichai, it was one of those rare occasion when the music seemed to write itself. Amichai, one of Israel’s most prominent poets, describes an experience of loss and new beginnings, and how love can evolve and change throughout life’s journey.

I was fortunate to work on this song (as well as the other songs on the album) together with one of my favorite human-beings on this planet and a musician I truly admire, Yoni Marianer. Yoni musically directed the project and co-arranged the music with me, as well as played upright bass on all the songs. I had the pleasure of having Micha Gilad on piano and Noam Israeli on drums and percussion, two incredibly sensitive and creative musicians whom I love with all my heart.

Hey guys,

Merry Hanukkah and happy new year!!! Just a quick note here that I DO NOT support the common spelling of the word "Hanukkah" - two k's in a row?? Are you kidding me?? Haven't the Jewish people suffered enough????

Apart from that, I am super duper hyper exhilarated to tell you that I'll be performing with my band in Norcal!! For those of you in the Bay Area, we'll be playing in Richmond, CA on 1/15, 7pm in a secret location that will be sent to you after purchasing the ticket. We'll have some free wine to smooth out the high frequencies if you know what I mean 😉😉😉

This show is very special to me since Angelo and I spent the first two years of Covid in Richmond, and ended up getting married there! We might reenact our whole wedding ceremony during the show, or we might not do that at all and just play music like normal people 😮 which one is it gonna be??

To put it simply - WOOOOO!!!!! I'm very excited to announce that I'll be performing on 12/7 at the iconic Sam First!! We’re playing two sets (7:30pm and 9pm). The show will also be streaming live, in case you can’t make it (hey mom🙋🏻‍♀️) - so no excuses, guys!

We’ll be playing some music from my upcoming album AND from my new instrumental “live-recordered” EP, recorded with these fine gentlemen listed below 👨‍👨‍👦 (it’s not that one is a kid of the two others, it’s just the only emoji I found).

Also, if you haven’t been to Sam First yet, it’s a real gem💎 a beautifully designed venue with superb sound, an amazing piano and a lovely and generous crew who’s really all about the music. It’s truly something else. Some of the best jazz shows in LA I’ve been to so far were played there (not biased but some were played by my band mates ♥️ ok, biased).
